Did you see ABC's "American Inventor"? If you want to better understand marketing, watch the people auditioning for the oppty to create America's next big invention. Most of the inventors think everyone will buy their product (they offer no target market) and they only explain the features (insteaad, they should be focusing on the benefits of what their product offers). If nothing else, the show IS a lesson in how important marketing is no matter what stage of your business you're at. Shows air on ABC Thursday nights.

Search engine pay-per-click (PPC) campaigns - there's more than just Google, Overture to consider. A group of smaller search engines have put together a flat-fee network for search advertising. How do you get around resistant prospects who hesitate to sign up for your e-mail list? You MUST have a way to capture e-mail addresses on your website since it's so critical to the success of your website. Is it OK to use graphics I find on someone else's website? Simply put, unless you have express written permission, you should NOT use graphics you find on other websites or printed materials in your own promotional efforts. Even if the graphics look like they might be stock photos, clipart or drawings, you need to locate the origin of that artwork and get permission to use it. In other words, those images are copyright protected. Of course, if you find the artwork on a stock image site, then read the fine print and make sure that when you purchase the image, you know what rights come with it.

Are other websites linking to your website? If you know of specific websites that are linking to your own, make sure you submit the exact website address showing your company name/link to the top 10-12 search engines. Check first and see IF that page is already coming up when you type in your company name into each search engine. If not, submit that website address, then check back in a few weeks to see if it's appearing in the search engine results. People tend to trust sites that have more than one search engine result (as long as it's not negative info!).
